How to Get Your Boutique Hotel Found by AI Travel Assistants
AI assistants are where travelers now research hotels. Here's what actually determines whether your property shows up — and how to improve your chances.
Tens of millions of travelers now use AI assistants — Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini — as their primary research tool for trip planning. The question is no longer whether AI will be a major hotel distribution channel. It already is. The question is whether your property appears in it.
How AI hotel recommendations actually work
Unlike Google, which ranks hotels by a combination of paid placement, review volume, and click-through rates, AI assistants respond to the intent and context of a traveler's question. When someone asks for "a boutique hotel with character in the Gothic Quarter under €200," the AI is trying to match the full meaning of that request — not just keywords.
What this means practically: AI recommendations are driven by data quality and specificity. A hotel with a rich description, named highlights (rooftop bar, historic building, Michelin-starred restaurant), neighbourhood context, and accurate amenity information will be recommended more confidently than one with a generic description and a star rating.
Boutique and independent hotels naturally have more to say about themselves than chain properties. That's an advantage — if the data is captured correctly.
The three channels that matter in 2026
ChatGPT Apps. OpenAI's App platform, launched in October 2025, lets hotel companies and aggregators connect structured hotel data to ChatGPT. Expedia, Booking.com, Accor, Wyndham, Hyatt, and IHG are all live. Lighthouse and DirectBooker offer independent hotel access via subscription and opt-in models respectively.
Claude Connectors. Anthropic's MCP (Model Context Protocol) platform allows hotels and aggregators to connect data directly to Claude's conversation interface. Wyndham went live in May 2026 as the first major hotel chain. DirectGuest was among the first boutique-focused connectors submitted for review.
Google AI Mode. Google's AI-powered search is integrating hotel recommendations directly. Marriott is specifically focused here, working with Google on a "priority search experience." For independent hotels without Marriott's BD budget, this channel is harder to influence directly.
What you can do now
1. Audit your data. The most common problem with independent hotel AI visibility is thin or generic descriptions. "Central location, great service" is not useful to an AI trying to explain why your hotel is the right choice for a specific traveler. Specific, distinctive copy matters: name the amenities, describe the building's character, name the neighbourhood and what's within walking distance.
2. Claim your direct booking link. AI apps like DirectGuest link travelers directly to your booking page — bypassing OTA commission entirely. This only works if your direct booking URL is accurate and your booking engine is functional. Check it.
3. Get into curated databases. AI apps pull data from structured sources. DirectGuest covers 3,600+ boutique and independent hotels across 38 cities. If your property is in one of those cities, apply to be included. No OTA commission — we track attribution and share the data with you.
4. Think about the traveler's question. AI recommendations are triggered by specific queries: "pet-friendly boutique hotel near the Uffizi," "jazz-bar hotel in the French Quarter," "design hotel walking distance from Sagrada Família." If your property genuinely fits these queries, make sure your data says so explicitly.
The independent hotels that get into AI channels now, with strong data, will be better positioned than those who wait until the market is fully established. The chains have already moved.
